Role of the Town Assessor
The Assessor is an appointed local government official responsible for maintaining an inventory of all parcels within the Town in order to establish fair and equitable property tax assessments.
In accordance with New York Real Property Tax Law, assessed values are used as one component in calculating real property tax bills. Assessments may change due to:
- Change in property use
- Issuance of building permits (new construction, renovation, or demolition)
- Market value updates and property condition changes
Core Responsibilities
The Assessor is responsible for:
- Preparing the annual assessment roll
- Discovering, listing, and valuing all real property in the Town
- Establishing market value of properties
- Assessing properties based on condition, ownership, and taxable status
- Determining eligibility for exemptions
