Role of the Code Enforcement Officer
The Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for administering and enforcing the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and related local building regulations. This role ensures that construction and property conditions meet safety, zoning, and building standards.

Core Responsibilities
Building Permits & Plan Review
- Reviewing building permit applications
- Approving or denying construction plans and specifications
- Issuing building permits for compliant projects
Construction & Safety Inspections
- Conducting construction inspections during building projects
- Performing fire safety inspections
- Conducting property maintenance inspections
Certificates & Occupancy
- Issuing Certificates of Occupancy
- Issuing Certificates of Compliance
- Approving temporary occupancy where applicable
Code Enforcement
- Enforcing the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code
- Enforcing zoning and property maintenance regulations
- Investigating complaints of code violations
- Issuing stop-work orders when necessary
- Issuing appearance tickets for violations
Property Maintenance & Zoning
- Responding to property maintenance complaints
- Reviewing zoning compliance issues
- Providing guidance on land development and building modifications
Additional Authority
The Code Enforcement Officer has the authority to:
- Order correction of code violations
- Suspend or revoke permits when necessary
- Require compliance with safety standards
- Initiate enforcement proceedings when violations persist
